What a great drawing in so many ways, well done, a great accomplishement There is so much goodness, the skin texture, the glasses and the slight distortion they make (and you even managed to get his bi-focal part) great job
Thanks! I get more comments on this piece than any other. What makes it different is I used a powdered charcoal undercoat with a brush on the dark skin areas. I've only used pencils on most of my other pieces.
I suppose it gets some of that shiny effect but not as badly as without the charcoal. I have learned that using charcoal causes different effects, especially with lighting. It seems when using charcoal it gives the appearance of absorbing the light, especially when used to draw fabric. In other words, it is a cooler dark.
You're absolutely right, there are certain instances where you should use charcoal, and some where you should use graphite. I never pressure a pencil into its darkest form, I think that the reflective qualities of graphite ruin the 'photo-realistic' look. This would be a lot more important is my work was of a good quality, but still.
